SEOUL, Aug 15 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea reported 1,817 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 223,928.
The daily caseload was down from 1,930 in the previous day, but it hovered above 1,000 for 40 straight days. The daily average tally for the past week was 1,853.
The recent resurgence was attributable to cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province.
Of the new cases, 478 were Seoul residents and 505 were people residing in Gyeonggi.
The virus also raged in non-metropolitan area. The number of newly infected people in the non-capital region was 671, or 38.4 percent of the total local transmission.
Sixty-eight cases were imported, lifting the combined figures to 12,806.
Eight more deaths were confirmed, bringing the death toll to 2,156. The total fatality rate stood at 0.96 percent.
A total of 1,325 more patients were discharged from quarantine, after making full recovery, pulling up the combined number to 195,103. The total recovery rate was 87.13 percent.
The country has tested over 12.34 million people, among whom 11,535,659 tested negative, and 585,131 are being checked.
Since the mass vaccination was launched on Feb 26, the country has administered COVID-19 vaccines to a total of 22,368,941 people, with 9,735,672 fully vaccinated.– NNN-YONHAP
