ABUJA, July 28 (NNN-Xinhua) — Nigerian police confirmed six gunmen and a senior police officer were killed following a gunfight between the police and an armed group in the country’s southeastern state of Imo.
Eleven other gunmen were arrested during the incident in the Oru-East local government area of the state on Monday evening, a spokesman for the police in Imo, Micheal Abattam, said in a statement.
Abattam said the armed group, who had been terrorizing the area, were moving in a convoy of vehicles when the police laid an ambush and engaged them in a gunfight.
Many of the gunmen fled into the bush, due to the superior firepower of the police, he said.
Tactical teams of the police have launched a search for the fleeing gunmen, combing the bushes and surrounding communities, the official added. — NNN-XINHUA
