Myanmar Drops Charges Against Some Arrestees Due To Suspension Of Court Proceedings Amid Pandemic

YANGON, Jul 22 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar’s State Administration Council, dropped some criminal cases with certain offenses, due to the suspension of court proceedings during the COVID-19 pandemic, state-run media reported yesterday.

The council’s order said that, the proceedings of the cases on Feb 1 and afterwards, will be withdrawn and the defendants will be released, due to the longer detention, as the courts cannot hear the defendants for COVID-19 health rules.

The order will be applied to the offenses under some sections of the Penal Code, the Criminal Code of Procedures, the Forest Law, the Gambling Law, the Excise Law, the Habitual Offenders Bond Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, the Arms Act, the Suppression of Prostitution Act, the Police Act, and the Television and Radio Law.

The council did not give further details on how many and when the defendants will be released.

According to a release by the Ministry of Health and Sports, Myanmar reported 6,093 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to 246,663 yesterday.– NNN-MNA
