COVID-19 Daily Cases In Cuba Soar As Delta Variant Spreads

HAVANA, Jul 14 (NNN-XINHUA) – Cuba has seen an increase in new COVID-19 infections, deaths and hospitalisations, as Delta variant spreads across the country.

On Monday, the Caribbean nation logged 6,423 coronavirus cases and 42 additional deaths, taking the national counts to 244,914 and 1,579, respectively.

On top of that, a daily average of 4,445 COVID-19 infections and 78 imported cases have been reported so far in July, according to official data, released by the government.

To date, 59.4 percent of the cases in Cuba have been registered in the cities of Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Matanzas.

Meanwhile, most people infected with the Delta strain on the island, have been reported in the provinces of Ciego de Avila and Matanzas, the new COVID-19 epicentres in Cuba, said Health Minister, Jose Angel Portal.

“Everybody is exposed to the contagion and can die due to this virus,” he warned.

Considering that four Cuban children and eight pregnant women have died of the virus since the outbreak of the pandemic, the government has called on families to protect children, adolescents, senior citizens and other vulnerable people.

Cuban authorities have adopted measures to increase the island’s hospital capacity by 510 beds in intensive care units.

Meanwhile, in Varadero, the country’s most popular seaside resort, two hotel facilities will be turned into COVID-19 wards, for infected patients in the western province of Matanzas.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil, said that, the nation has spent about 182 million U.S. dollars on medical supplies and equipment, in response to the health emergency.

In parallel, more than 19 percent of adults across the country have received three doses of locally made vaccines.– NNN-XINHUA
