DHAKA, Jul 13 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government decided to ease the ongoing lockdown for a week, from Jul 15, to help Muslims prepare for the festival of Eid-ul-Azha.
Bangladesh’s Press Information Department (PID) made the announcement last night, saying, the lockdown restrictions will be eased from Jul 15 to Jul 22, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, which is set to be celebrated in the country on Jul 21.
The country’s cabinet division will issue a notification, containing details on easing of the restrictions and prohibitions, today, said the announcement.
As part of easing lockdown measures, the government is likely to allow public transport services, on condition of complying with health rules, a cabinet division official said.
Shops and shopping malls will also to be allowed to resume with strict health guidelines in place, the official added.
The authorities approved 21 cattle markets to help Dhaka dwellers buy sacrificial animals in designated spots in the capital, ahead of the festival, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bangladesh reported 13,768 new cases by 8:00 a.m. local time, the highest daily spike, bringing the tally to 1,034,957, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said. Also, the official data showed 220 more deaths were recorded yesterday, raising the death toll to 16,639.
To curb the virus transmission, Bangladesh on Jul 1, entered a strict one-week COVID-19 lockdown, that had subsequently been extended till tomorrow. Army personnel have been deployed to patrol alongside civilian forces to maintain law and order.– NNN-BSS
