SYDNEY, Jul 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Authorities of Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), warned that the situation might be “much worse,” as the daily increase of COVID-19 cases in Sydney continued climbing.
Today, NSW Health, recorded 77 new locally acquired cases, in the 24 hours to 8:00 p.m. yesterday. A woman in her 90s, a close contact of another local case, died yesterday, becoming the first death in the latest outbreak.
Among the new cases, 55 were linked to a known case or cluster, and the remaining 22 cases were under investigation.
NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, said, the main concern is the number of people who have been exposed in the community and the number of cases in NSW might be greater than 100 in the future.
“So we can’t stress enough the importance of not only following the rules but also realising the risk that, its the people who will suffer the most,” she said.
Berejiklian said, tomorrow and the few days afterwards, “will be worse, much worse than we’ve seen today. What we need to be assured of is that, the tide will turn once the impact of the changes we’ve made come to fruition,” she said.
The total number of local cases reported since Jun 16 has reached 566, and there are currently 52 cases admitted to hospital, with 15 people in intensive care.
Among those admitted to hospital, eleven are under the age of 35, and six are under the age of 25. NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr. Kerry Chant said, this “dispels the myth that (the virus) is only for the elderly.”
The authorities also urged residents to strictly follow restrictions, as state police issued 106 infringement notices in 24 hours.– NNN-AGENCIES
