HONG KONG, Jul 8 (NNN-XINHUA) – Asia-Pacific kept on high alert yesterday, as Indonesia and South Korea confirmed record high daily COVID-19 infections, while India witnessed resurgence in cases and deaths.
Indonesia recorded 34,379 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily spike and bringing the total tally to 2,379,397, the health ministry said.
The ministry also reported that, the related death toll added by 1,040, the biggest daily rise since the pandemic hit the country in Mar last year, to 62,908.
An additional 14,835 recovered patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total number of recoveries from the pandemic in the country to 1,973,388.
South Korea reported 1,212 more cases, raising the total number of infections to 162,753.
The daily caseload was up from 746 the previous day, marking the highest in over six months, since Dec 25 last year. The daily average caseload for the past week was 827. The continued triple-digit growth was attributable to small cluster infections, in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province, as well as, imported cases.
Of the new cases, 577 were Seoul residents and 357 were people residing in Gyeonggi. One more death was confirmed, raising the death toll to 2,033.
India’s tally rose to 30,663,665, as 43,733 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data. Besides, 930 deaths since Tuesday morning took the total death toll to 404,211.
After continuously falling in the past few days, both new cases and deaths rose sharply during the past 24 hours. There are still 459,920 active cases in the country.
Pakistan, on Tuesday, confirmed 1,517 new cases, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said yesterday.
The NCOC said that the country’s number of overall confirmed cases had risen to 966,007, including 909,525 recoveries.
The number of active cases has risen to 34,013, who are under treatment across the country, including 1,941 critical patients. According to the NCOC, the pandemic killed 17 people on Tuesday, increasing the overall death toll to 22,469.
Cambodia confirmed 981 new cases, pushing the national caseload to 57,103, so far, the Ministry of Health (MoH), said in a statement. The new infections included 716 local cases and 265 imported cases.
A total of 19 new fatalities had been reported, taking the overall death toll to 798, the statement said, adding that, 934 patients recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 48,974.– NNN-XINHUA
