WASHINGTON, June 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Six hundred and fifty soldiers from the United States of America (USA) are expected to remain in Afghanistan to guarantee the security of diplomats after the total withdrawal of troops, which should take place in the coming weeks.
The information was provided by sources from the US Armed Forces who said that about 100 more soldiers are expected to remain deployed at the airport in Kabul, at least until September , to assist the Turkish military responsible for the security of that infrastructure.
Most of the troops should return by July 4, they continued, fulfilling the target set several months ago.
The departure of more than four thousand contingents from Afghan territory is expected to take place long before the deadline set by the President, Democrat Joe Biden, on Sept 11.
The withdrawal comes at the same time as tensions have risen from the Taliban, accentuating fears that the Afghan government and the national armed forces will collapse in a matter of months.
US military officials have repeatedly pointed out that security at Kabul’s Hamid Karzia International Airport is a critical requirement for maintaining the US diplomatic corps in Afghanistan.
However, keeping some troops on the ground, albeit for diplomats’ security reasons, hinders Biden’s intention to declare an end to the longest war in which the country has been involved.
The White House intends to put an end to the conflict that has been around for two decades and focus on threats coming from Beijing and Moscow. — NNN-AGENCIES
