JAKARTA, Jun 19 (NNN-ANTARA) – The Natural Resources Conservation Centre, in Indonesia’s Aceh province, released one male and one female Sumatran orangutans to their habitat, in a natural reserve in the country, an official said yesterday.
The two orangutans from Aceh have previously been rehabilitated at the Sumatran Orangutan quarantine and rehabilitation centre of the neighbouring North Sumatra province, and have been released into the Jantho natural reserve area, in North Sumatra, the Aceh centre’s head, Agus Arianto, said in a statement.
The 10-year-old male orangutan, weighing approximately 25 kg, was handed over by local people in 2016, and the female one aged around 13 years old and weighing about 41 kg was evacuated in 2021, Arianto said.
He further said that the centre has so far released 132 Sumatran orangutans, and some of them were born in the Jantho natural reserve area.
“The births of the three orangutans in the Jantho natural reserve area, indicate that the area is a suitable habitat for the Sumatran orangutans, and therefore, the two released orangutans were expected to soon adapt to and breed in their new habitat,” he said.– NNN-ANTARA
