NEW DELHI, Jun 19 (NNN-PTI) – A committee of Indian lawmakers, grilled two Twitter India employees here yesterday, over the social media platform’s “failure” in complying with the new Information Technology (IT) rules, framed by the Indian government, according to local media reports.
The new rules entail provision of an appointment of a chief compliance officer. At the meeting, the Twitter India officials were asked, why the company should not be fined, for “non-compliance” with the Indian laws and relevant rules.
Three lawmakers belonging to the country’s main ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reportedly led the charge against the microblogging site.
Twitter India, which is said not to comply with the federal government’s new social media intermediary guidelines, was said to have been told, it was not above the law.
At the meeting, Twitter India was reportedly represented by its legal counsel, Ayushi Kapoor, and senior manager for public policy, Shagufta Kamran.
Following the meeting, Twitter India is said to have issued a statement saying, it was prepared to work with the parliamentary panel on safeguarding Indian citizens’ rights.– NNN-PTI
