UN Warning about Expansion of Illicit Crops in Colombia

BOGOTA, March 6 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), attached to the UN, warned about the increase in coca leaf cultivation and cocaine production in Colombia.

In its annual report, published in this capital, the INCB notes that since 2013 illicit crops have expanded alarmingly, from 48,000 hectares that year to more than 170,000 currently.

This increase is strongly felt in the departments of Antioquia, Cauca and Putumayo, in the Colombian Pacific region and in Norte de Santander, in the northeast of the South American country.

The United Nations indicates that cocaine production also grew in Colombia, from 1,333 tons in 2016 to 1,379 tons in 2017.

The INCB states that the United States and Europe are the two main markets for Colombian cocaine.

The Colombian National Government has stressed that it is its purpose to disrupt the drug supply networks.

Regarding the decrease in the extensive area of coca plantations, it has been questioned for betting more on forced eradication and the harmful fumigation with glyphosate than on the strategy of voluntary substitution of illicit crops, reflected in the Peace Agreement. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA:
