MOSCOW, May 18 (NNN-TASS) – Uncontrollable escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can pose a serious threat to the “fragile security system” of the region, the Kremlin said yesterday.
A lack of mutual trust and armed clashes are not conducive to stability, Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told a daily briefing.
“Major efforts are now being made by the (Middle East) Quartet, and countries are in contact with both the Israelis and Palestinians, through bilateral channels to stop the exchange of strikes,” he said.
Peskov said, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has not been in contact with the Israeli or Palestinian leaders, but such contact can be organised.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, said that, the Quartet, which consists of the United Nations, Russia, the European Union and the United States, held emergency consultations via video link on Sunday.
Special representatives of the four parties discussed practical steps aimed at ceasefire, deescalation of military confrontations, and civilian protection.– NNN-TASS
