ADEN, May 9 (NNN-SABA) – Four civilians were killed, in a roadside mine explosion, in Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Hodeidah yesterday, a government official said.
“Four members of a family lost their lives, after their vehicle touched off an improvised explosive device (IED), while travelling on the main road in Hodeidah’s southern parts,” the local government source said.
The vehicle was destroyed in the explosion, that also left five other civilians including women and children seriously injured, the source said.
The pro-government forces stationed on the country’s western coast areas blamed the Houthi rebel group for being behind the incident.
Previous reports of humanitarian organisations suggested that, Yemen has become one of the largest landmine battlefields in the world, since World War II.
The Houthis launched a large military campaign and seized the capital Sanaa in late 2014, forcing Yemen’s President, Abdu-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government into exile.
Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries intervened militarily and began pounding the Houthi-controlled Sanaa in Mar, 2015, in response to an official request from Hadi.– NNN-SABA
