Nepal Records Its Highest Daily Deaths From COVID-19

KATHMANDU, Apr 30 (NNN-XINHUA) – Nepal reported a record high deaths in a single day from the COVID-19 pandemic yesterday, as the coronavirus crisis deepens in the Himalayan country.

A total of 35 people died in the last 24 hours, according to the data, released by Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population. This is the highest number of deaths from the pandemic in a single day, since the pandemic hit Nepal early last year.

Last record of highest deaths in a single day was on Nov 4 last year, when a total of 30 deaths were reported. Total deaths from the pandemic in Nepal as of yesterday reached 3,246.

The ministry said, an increasing death rate was the result of growing cases in recent days. “The new wave also proved to be more infectious and dangerous and many people need to be hospitalised, compared to the first wave,” Sher Bahadur Pun, chief of the Clinical Research Unit at Kathmandu-based Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, said.

Nepal also reported 4,928 new cases yesterday, which is the third highest case ever reported in a single day, according to Nepal’s health ministry.

Nepal has been seeing rapid rise in cases in recent days. In the last one week, cases more than doubled, as they went up from 2,428 on Apr 22, to nearly 5,000 yesterday.

In order to break the chain of infections, the government enforced lockdown in Kathmandu for two weeks, and similar measure has been enforced in many other areas.– NNN-XINHUA
