Palestine Seeking More Int’l Pressure On Israel To Allow Elections In East Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, Apr 28 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestine said yesterday that, it is seeking more international pressure on Israel, to allow its upcoming elections held in East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian leadership will “hold a meeting tomorrow, to determine the fate of the elections and reach a unified position,” Palestinian presidential spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said.

Rudeineh reiterated the determination of the Palestinian leadership, particularly President Mahmoud Abbas, that the elections will not take place without East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Minister of Civil Affairs, Hussein al-Sheikh said, Israel officially informed them that its position on elections in East Jerusalem “remains negative.”

In Jan, Abbas announced that the 2021 general elections will include the legislative elections on May 22, the presidential elections on July 31, and the elections of the Palestinian National Council, the highest decision-making body of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, on Aug 31.

The Palestinian leadership insists on holding the general elections in occupied East Jerusalem, as in the two previous legislative elections, held in 1996 and 2006, and the 2005 presidential elections.

But so far, Israel has not given approval to Palestine’s request, to hold them in East Jerusalem.– NNN-WAFA
