DHAKA, April 2 (NNN-BSS) — Bangladesh has imposed a 16-day ban on entry of passengers from all European nations except the United Kingdom (UK) and 12 other countries from April 3 to check the new spike of coronavirus.
Apart from Europe, the 12 other countries are Argentina, Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, Qatar, South Africa, Turkey and Uruguay, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) announced Thursday.
As per the circular, the ban comes into effect from April 3 and will continue till April 18.
Airlines operating scheduled passenger flights from all those countries will be allowed to carry only transit passengers to Bangladesh subject to the conditions that the passengers remain confined inside the terminal building only, it said.
The CAAB said it came up with the decision after reviewing the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic situation throughout the country and across the world.
Bangladesh Thursday reported 6,469 COVID-19 cases, the highest in a single day since its first detection on March 8 last year while the coronavirus claimed overnight 59 lives, the second highest figure in terms of fatality, so far.
“The tally of infections has surged to 617,764 as 6,469 new cases
were confirmed in the last 24 hours . . . 59 people died of COVID-19 during the period,” Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its routine daily statement said.
DGHS officials said the both the fatality and infection figures suggested the trend to be worsening, prompting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to issue a clarion call in parliament seeking optimum precautions by individuals in containing the spread of the coronavirus. — NNN-BSS
