MUMBAI, Mar 4 (NNN-PTI) – Indian Railways successfully completed a trial run of double-stacked dwarf container train, from Mehsana, 599 km from Mumbai, to the country’s premier container port, on the west coast-JNPT yesterday, a statement by JNPT said.
This was the first time that the train, with five wagons of double-stacked dwarf containers, arrived at JNPT port, which accounts for around 52 percent of India’s total containerised cargo volume, across major ports in the country.
In 2018, these trains were first operated on trial basis, at other locations in Asia’s third largest economy.
The dwarf containers provide 67 percent increase in volume, when double-stacked, and can carry a weight of 71 tonnes, against 40 tonnes by a normal container.
Indian Railways also gave 17 percent discount on haulage cost for double-stacked dwarf container trains, compared to double-stacked normal container trains coupled with additional volume benefit.
Terming the concept of dwarf container as a game changer, JNPT said that, it was in the process of finalising an operator for dwarf container depot, to de-stuff and re-stuff export-import containers.– NNN-PTI
