Covid-19: Brazil, Ecuador, Chile see surging cases in 24 hours

BRASILIA, Feb 28 (NNN-Xinhua) — Brazil registered 1,386 deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 254,221, the Ministry of Health reported.

A total of 61,602 new cases were reported, bringing the national tally to 10,517,232, according to the ministry.

Brazil has the second largest number of deaths from the coronavirus, following the United States, and the third largest number of cases, after the United States and India.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous state in the country, is the hardest hit by the pandemic, with 2,037,267 cases and 59,428 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 582,164 cases and 33,035 deaths.

As of Friday, 6.4 million Brazilians have received at least one dose of vaccine against COVID-19, while 1.8 million people have received both doses.

QUITO: Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health reported 1,748 new COVID-19 cases and 61 deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 284,347 and the death toll to 11,032.

The province of Pichincha, where the capital city of Quito is located, remains the most affected by the pandemic, according to the ministry.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the ministry has conducted 1,005,188 tests for COVID-19.

A total of 531 patients are currently hospitalized for complications related to COVID-19, and the health system has been under considerable strain, it added.

On Jan. 21, Ecuador started its vaccination program with the inoculation of health personnel and the elderly in care homes.

SANTIAGO: Chile reported 4,523 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total to 821,418, of which 23,585 are active, a health official said.

Undersecretary of Healthcare Networks Alberto Dougnac said that the regions with the highest numbers of confirmed cases in the last week are Coquimbo, O’Higgins, Valparaiso, and Los Rios.

The Department of Health Statistics and Information reported another 76 deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 20,476. — NNN-XINHUA
