Qatari Special Envoy Holds Talks With Pakistani Officials On Afghan Peace Process

ISLAMABAD, Feb 23 (NNN-APP) – Mutlaq bin Majed Al-Qahtani, special envoy of Qatar’s foreign minister for counter-terrorism and mediation of conflict resolution, held talks with Pakistani Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, focusing on the Afghan peace process.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said, Qureshi reiterated, during the meeting with the special envoy that, Pakistan strongly believes in a negotiated settlement, as there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Emphasising that peace and stability in Afghanistan are in Pakistan’s interest, Qureshi underscored the need to remain vigilant of the role of spoilers, seeking to undermine the peace process.

Qureshi appreciated Qatar’s positive and constructive efforts, as host of the U.S.-Taliban talks that culminated in the peace agreement and the subsequent intra-Afghan negotiations. He highlighted that both Pakistan and Qatar facilitated the peace process, according to the statement.

The Qatari special envoy also called on Bajwa, at the Headquarters of the Pakistan army in Rawalpindi, an army statement said.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security situation, cooperation in various fields and facilitation of the reconciliation process in Afghanistan were discussed in detail, according to the statement.– NNN-APP
