US soldiers in Wiesbaden, Germany
BERLIN, Feb 5 (NNN-Xinhua) — Germany welcomed the US decision to stop the military withdrawal from Germany planned by former President Donald Trump, federal government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said Friday.
“We have always been convinced that the stationing of American troops here in Germany serves European and transatlantic security and is therefore in our mutual interest,” said Seibert at the regular government press conference.
He added that decades of cooperation between Germany and the US armed forces is greatly appreciated, and that is part of the transatlantic friendship.
US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the plans drawn up under his predecessor Trump to withdraw some 12,000 American soldiers from Germany will be put on hold. There will be no troop withdrawal until a thorough review of the worldwide stationing of US soldiers is completed.
