TRIPOLI, Feb 28 (NNN-Xinhua) — Germany contributed 15 million euros (17.05 million U.S. dollars) to the Libyan Stabilization Fund, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said.
German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza and UNDP Resident Representative in Libya Sultan Hajiyev signed an agreement on Germany’s aid on Tuesday, the UNDP said in a statement.
The donation from Germany will bring the total financial support for the Libyan Stabilization Fund to 28.5 million euros (32.6 million U.S. dollars), according to the statement.
Founded in 2016, the Libyan Stabilization Fund is run by the Libyan Ministry of Planning in cooperation with the UN Mission and seeks to provide assistance to vulnerable groups in Libya that suffer from military actions and conflicts in the country.
Libya has been suffering escalating violence and chaos ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011.
Meanwhile, a training center for women opened here Wednesday as part of a support program funded by the European Union (EU) and Germany.
The center, with a venue for sports, recreational activities and intercommunity exchanges, provides vocational training and skills development projects for women, the European Delegation to Libya said in a statement.
“Women are being supported to set up a self-managed supervisory model at the center,” read the statement.
The new center is a part of the Support to Municipalities program, which is funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to the statement.
During the inauguration of the center, EU Ambassador to Libya Alan Bugeja and German Ambassador Oliver Owcza stressed the important role that Libyan women play in building a stable and prosperous Libya.
According to the two officials, this is the first of ten centers which will open this year. — NNN-XINHUA
