Philippines Logs 2,245 New COVID-19 Cases, India’s Tally Rises To 10,689,527

HONG KONG, Jan 28 (NNN-XINHUA) – The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific as the Philippines reported 2,245 new cases yesterday, while India’s tally rose to 10,689,527, as 12,689 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours.

According to official data, the death toll in India mounted to 153,724, as 137 patients died since Tuesday.

There are still 176,498 active cases in the country, while 10,359,305 people have been discharged, so far, from hospitals after medical treatment.

The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines reported 2,245 new cases, the highest in more than two months in the country.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Philippines surged to 518,407.

The death toll climbed to 10,481, after 95 more patients died from the disease, the DOH said. It added, 140 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 475,542.

The Philippine government announced that, all incoming passengers will be required to stay in a quarantine facility upon arrival starting from Feb 1.

Thailand confirmed 819 new infections, with most of the cases being found in a province that is the epicentre of the latest outbreak, first detected in mid-Dec, official data showed.

Thailand has so far confirmed 15,465 cases of infection, 13,058 of which were domestic infections, while 2,407 others were imported cases.

Of that total, 11,054 patients have fully recovered and been released from hospitals, while 4,335 others are currently hospitalised.

South Korea reported 559 more cases, as of Tuesday, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 76,429.

The daily caseload rose above 500 in 10 days, owing to new cluster infections linked to a Christian missionary group in Daejeon, about 160 km south of Seoul, that has a nationwide network.

Seven more deaths were confirmed, bringing the death toll to 1,378.

The number of confirmed cases in the Maldives crossed 15,000, local media reported yesterday.

Data from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) showed 146 new cases were detected on Tuesday, raising the country’s total case count to 15,247.

According to the HPA, there are 1,273 active cases, out of which 93 patients have been hospitalised. A total of 13,916 patients have recovered, while 51 have died.

The COVID-19 death toll in Afghanistan increased to 2,398, after eight patients died within the past 24 hours, the country’s Ministry of Public Health, said.

The ministry also confirmed 37 new cases during the period, bringing the number of infected people across the country to 54,891, including 4,945 active cases. 90 people recovered and were discharged from hospitals since Tuesday, according to the ministry.– NNN-XINHUA
