Japan’s At-Home COVID-19 Deaths Rise, As Self-Quarantine Numbers Soar

TOKYO, Jan 26 (NNN-NHK) – Japan’s National Police Agency (NPA) said, almost 200 people across the country, who had contracted COVID-19, died outside of hospitals, and other medical facilities.

The NPA said, from Mar last year through Jan, 197 people died, after contracting the virus at home and other places, other than hospitals.

Compared to 56 such deaths confirmed in Dec, the NPA said, from Jan 1 – 20, 75 deaths were confirmed.

The NPA also said, in many of the cases, COVID-19 was not detected in the individuals, until after they had died, and prior to passing away the carriers had found it difficult being admitted to hospitals and medical facilities, despite being symptomatic of the virus.

Recent data from the health ministry, meanwhile, showed that the number of people self-quarantining after contracting the virus is soaring in Japan.

The figure climbed from 1,096 carriers on Nov 4, to 6,429 on Dec 9, before surging to 17,484 on Jan 6, and 35,394 last Wednesday.

Experts voiced concerns that the conditions of people self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 are deteriorating, with local government’s efforts, such as, providing equipment to monitor blood oxygen levels and hotlines to healthcare providers, failing to provide enough support.– NNN-NHK
