Caricom Keeps Anti-Interference Position on Venezuela

BASSETERRA, Feb 27 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The leaders of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) ratified on Tuesday the regional bloc”s anti-interference stance on the situation in Venezuela, said Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Timothy Harris.

During the sessions of the Conference of Heads of Government of that organization that meets in this capital, Harris again defended the need to find a peaceful solution based on dialogue between the government of Nicolas Maduro and the opposition.

‘I have no doubt that the principled position adopted by Caricom has so far prevented a catastrophe on our borders,’ he said.

During the two-day meeting, Harris is expected to present the development of the Montevideo Mechanism to regional leaders.

That diplomatic initiative is Caricom’s, Mexico’s and Uruguay’s response to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ request to find a path toward a peaceful resolution for Venezuela.

The document proposes solutions through dialogue and from a position of respect for international law and human rights.

According to Harris, the Montevideo Mechanism is the only way to address the complex political situation in Venezuela and represents the best initiative to achieve peace in the South American country.

Meanwhile in Venezuelan capita CARACAS, the president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Diosdado Cabello, said no foreign soldier will tread Venezuelan soil, in response to the possibility of a US military aggression against the South American nation.

‘Anyone who attacks the country or supports an intervention will be declared an enemy of the country,’ said the head of the plenipotentiary body when he spoke at a popular gathering in the eastern state of Delta Amacuro.

Cabello said that after the support to the coup maneuvers of the Venezuelan opposition is the true interest of the US government to seize the country’s energy resources and other riches.

The also first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) reiterated the call to the people to maintain unity and absolute mobilization together with the Bolivarian National Armed Forces in defense of sovereignty and peace.

He reiterated that the United States is at the head of the coup attempt in Venezuela, supporting the self-proclamation of an illegitimate president, intensifying economic sanctions and promoting a military intervention disguised as a humanitarian aid operation.

Cabello highlighted the courage of Venezuelans who defended territorial sovereignty during the episodes of opposition violence recorded last weekend in the western state of Táchira, bordering Colombia, where alleged international assistance was intended. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
