KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Tuesday issued bad and alert weather warnings, with heavy rains expected in several states across the country until Wednesday.
MetMalaysia in a statement Tuesday said continuous heavy rain is predicted in Kelantan state involving the districts of Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.
Heavy rains are expected to occur throughout the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and several districts in Perak, namely Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta.
“During this period, strong winds can occur in coastal areas in the east coast states of the Peninsula and Sabah.
“Most areas in the west coast of the Peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah are expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy rain along with strong winds, especially in the evening until early night,” the statement said.
The situation will also lead to flash floods in low-lying areas as well as damage to weak soil structures.
Meanwhile, MetMalaysia also predicts strong northeastern winds with speeds of up to 60km/h with waves reaching 4.5 metres to occur in the waters of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor during the period.
“In the waters of Sarawak, Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, strong northeastern winds with speeds of up to 50 km/h with waves of up to 3.5 metres are expected to occur in the same period, and this incident could pose a risk of overflow of seawater and river estuaries,” according to the statement.
