KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) — More people were being evacuated due to the floods in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan states, while the situation in Perak, Selangor and Johor is reported to be improving with the drop in the number of evacuees.
In PAHANG, the situation is reported to have worsened with 18,976 people, involving 5,032 families, having been evacuated to 241 relief centres as at 7.30 am Wednesday.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) information portal, Maran district still recorded the highest number of evacuees, totalling 4,501 people, followed by Temerloh (3,020), Lipis (2,551), Raub (2,402), Jerantut (2,329), Kuantan(2,321), Rompin (1,012), Pekan (430) and Bera (410).
However, the situation in Bentong is back to normal with the closure of the relief centres in the district Tuesday.
Meanwhile, as at 7 am Wednesday, the measurement at the flood assessment point in the districts of Bera, Kuantan, Lipis, Jerantut, Temerloh and Maran was still above the danger level.
Meanwhile, the concessionaire of the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), ANIH Berhad, in a statement, said that KM113 and KM115 were closed on both directions due to the flood.
At KM84.6 – KM84.7 (between Persimpangan Lanchang to Persimpangan Karak), LPT1 Kuantan-bound, is also closed to traffic. but the route from Lanchang heading to Kuala Lumpur has been opened since 9 am Tuesday.
In TERENGGANU, Chief Secretariat of the State Disaster Management Committee, Lt Col (PA) Che Adam A. Rahman said the number of flood victims has increased to 267 people at 8 am today, from 117 people at 3 pm Tuesday.
Two relief centres were reopened in Dungun to accommodate the 156 evacuees, he added.
In KELANTAN, Tanah Merah is the second district to be hit by the floods with eight relief centres being activated to accommodate 125 evacuees from 33 families, as at 8 am Wednesday.
According to JKM’s InfoBencana, Gua Musang was the first district, but the situation has improved with all the relief centres in the district closed Tuesday.
Meanwhile, according to infobanjir.water.gov.my, three main rivers in the state recorded readings which exceeded the danger level, namely Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai at 25.62 metre (m) (danger level is 25.00 m), Sungai Kelantan at Kusial, Tanah Merah, at 16.11 m (16.00 m) and Sungai Golok in Jenob, Tanah Merah, at 24.23 m (23.50 m).
In PERAK, a total of 520 flood victims, comprising 152 families from three districts, have been evacuated as at 7 am today, with Hilir Perak recording the highest number, at 484 people, followed by Kampar (32) and Muallim (four).
Based on infobanjir.water.gov.my, Sungai Plus in Kampung Lintang, Kuala Kangsar exceeded the warning level at 54.93 meter (m), while Sungai Perak in Kampung Gajah is at the alert level, at 6.62 m.
In SELANGOR, the flood situation is reported improving with only two relief centres, which accommodate 68 victims from 20 families, still operating at 6 am Wednesday.
In JOHOR, there are also signs of the situation getting better with the number of evacuees having dropped to 3,566 people (903 families) at 8 am today, from 4,116 people (1,036 families) at 8 pm Tuesday.
Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman R.Vidyananthan, in a statement, said Kota Tinggi is the worst affected district with 17 relief centres still operating to accommodate 2,122 victims from 533 families.
In Kluang, there are 919 flood evacuees from 223 families, Mersing (292 people from 77 families), Segamat (90 people from 24 families), Johor Bahru (72 people from 24 families) and Batu Pahat (71 people from 22 families).
He said the roads that are still closed to traffic are Jalan Mawai Lama in Kota Tinggi; Jalan Haji Suhud in Taman Muhibbah, Johor Bahru; areas surrounding Nitar 2 petrol station and junction at Kahang to Kluang at Jalan Nitar Utama-Kluang, Mersing.
The current floods in Johor has claimed three lives.
