YANGON, Jan 2 (NNN-MNA) – The Arakan Army (AA), freed three members of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) Party, who were abducted in Oct last year, according to a release from the Military True News Information Team, yesterday.
Three party representatives were taken by the AA armed group, during a campaigning activity, ahead of the general elections in Taungup township, on Oct 14.
The release of the three representatives came, as a result of recent meeting between the military and the AA armed group, the release said.
“This is a positive prospect of peace and we welcome such move,” Monywa Aung Shin, secretary of NLD’s Central Information Committee, said.
Along with the three, the AA yesterday also released three soldiers, who were taken by the group, during a fighting in Rakhine state.
Following the elections, which were held on Nov 8 last year, the military formed the Peace Talks Committee, to continue talks with the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) signatories ethnic armed organisations, to facilitate the peace process, while to increase dialogues with non-signatories, towards achieving lasting peace in the country.– NNN-MNA
