India’s Rajasthan To Track Over 800 British Tourists Amid Concerns Of Mutant COVID-19 Strain

NEW DELHI, Dec 26 (NNN-PTI) – Authorities in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, began to track 811 British tourists, who arrived there over the past two months, amid concerns about the detection of a mutant COVID-19 strain in Britain, local media reported.

Federal government officials shared the details of the tourists with the Rajasthan government, the Hindustan Times said.

“We have forwarded the details to district collectors and directed them to ensure isolation and testing of the tourists,” the newspaper quoted senior health official, Raviprakash Sharma, as having said.

The newspaper said, of these British visitors, 333 arrived in Jaipur, followed by 73 in Jodhpur, 70 in Ajmer, 48 in Alwar, 43 in Udaipur, 39 in Kota and 24 in Jhunjhunu.

“We are to monitor all who arrived from the UK,” the newspaper quoted a senior health official, Narottam Sharma, as saying. “In three-four days, we will be able to reach every single tourist from the UK in Jaipur.”

So far the new mutated strain of COVID-19 has not been found in India.

The Indian government, on Wednesday, temporarily suspended flights from Britain, in wake of the new strain of COVID-19 found there. The ban will remain in place until Dec 31.

India’s health ministry has ordered surveillance of all passengers who travelled from or transited through Britain, in the last four weeks and issued a new protocol for testing and isolation.– NNN-PTI
