BEIRUT, Dec 23 (NNN-NNA) – Lebanese Prime Minister-designate, Saad Hariri, announced that, meetings will be held with President Michel Aoun, to form a cabinet ahead of Christmas, said a statement by Hariri’s office.
Hariri made the remarks in a brief statement to reporters, after his meeting at Baabda Palace with Aoun, the 13th such meeting between the two, since the appointment of Hariri to form the government.
Governmental deadlock in Lebanon has been ongoing, since the resignation of Hassan Diab’s government on Aug 10, in reaction to Beirut port’s blasts, and the announcement by the former Prime Minister-designate, Mustafa Adib, on Sept 26, of his failure to form a new government.
Hariri pledged to form a government of specialists, in order to carry out structural reforms, but disagreements among political parties about the distribution of sovereign portfolios, disrupted government formation over months.
Lebanon is facing political and economic crises that led to a failure to repay its sovereign debts, the collapse of the national currency, and the escalation of poverty and unemployment.
The outbreak of COVID-19 and Beirut port’s explosions exacerbated the crises in the country.– NNN-NNA
