BAGHDAD, Dec 22 (NNN-NINA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, confirmed the arrest of several suspects, for the latest attack on the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad.
“The attack on the Green Zone on Sunday, is a cowardly terrorist act,” al-Kadhimi said in a press release, after a cabinet extraordinary session, held to approve the country’s annual budget for 2021.
“We arrested a group of suspects, who attacked the Green Zone with rockets,” al-Kadhimi said, asserting that the rockets hit Iraqis and caused damage and injuries, without giving the exact number of suspects.
“We will not accept any attack on diplomatic missions,” al-Kadhimi said, adding that, the security officials, who are responsible for the security of the area from which the rockets were launched, have been arrested.
On Sunday, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said that the Green Zone was attacked with eight rockets, wounding an Iraqi soldier and causing damage to residential buildings.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops across Iraq, as well as, the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone, have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.
U.S. troops have been deployed in Iraq to support Iraqi forces in battles against Daesh militants, and providing training and advice to the Iraqi forces.– NNN-NINA
