LANGKAWI (Malaysia), Feb 25 (NNN-BERNAMA) — A ferry serving the popular island of Langkawi in Malaysia caught fire here Monday afternoon, but all 52 passengers on board were unharmed and brought to safety.
Deputy Director of Operations (Kedah and Perlis) with Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Captain Zulinda Ramly said the incident took place when the ferry was transporting passengers from the Kuah Ferry Terminal to Kuala Perlis.
“The ferry left the terminal around 2.30 pm and about 15 minutes later, the ferry’s engine caught fire. The crew on realising the fire had instructed all the passengers to gather at the ferry’s front area.
“All the 52 passengers were then transferred to nearby fishing boats following a mayday call from the ferry’s captain,” she said when met by Bernama at the Kuah terminal here.
Zulinda said all passengers were unharmed except for two who had sustained some injuries and they were taken to the hospital for treatment.
As of late Monday afternoon, all the passengers were still at the Kuah Ferry Terminal.
