ACCRA, Dec 11 (NNN-GNA) — The Electoral Commission has announced the certified Parliamentary results of the 2020 election across 275 constituencies.
According to a statement issued by the EC on Thursday, the ruling New Patriotic Party has won 137 seats in Parliament while the National Democratic Congress has won 136 seats.
One independent candidate has however won a seat in Parliament while one outstanding result is yet to be provided from the Sene West Constituency.
The Ashanti Region gained the most seats with 42 won for the NPP while the NDC gained 20 seats from the Greater Accra Region.
Ghanaians went to the polls on Dec 7 for the eighth time since 1992 to elect a President and 275 Members of Parliament as part of a four-year constitutional mandate.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensa on Wednesday announced that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP elected president after polling 6,730,413, representing 51.595 ercent while John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress garnered 6,214,889 representing 47.366 percent in the 8th election in the 4th Republic that had 12 candidates.
Meanwhile, Akufo-Addo has appointed a transitional team to facilitate the smooth changeover of administration even though his party, the NPP and himself will remain as president for the next four years.
Under the Ghanaian constitution, a transitional team is enacted 24 hours after the declaration of presidential results.
The appointment of the transitional team comes a day after the EC declared the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo as the next president-elect on Wednesday, December 9.
The incumbent president Akufo-Addo polled 51% of votes to beat the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama who polled 47% of votes according to the EC.
In a statement released from the Jubilee House, the president appointed 15 people to oversee the transitioning of the next government.
The transitional team will be chaired by Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.
The team is expected to oversee the swearing-in of President Akufo Addo’s second term on Jan 7, 2021. — NNN-GNA
