Covid-19: Latin America see surge in new cases

MEXICO CITY, Nov 26 (NNN-Xinhua) — MEXICO’s Health Ministry reported 10,335 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total number of infections to 1,070,487.

The country recorded 858 more deaths in the past 24 hours, raising its COVID-19-related death toll to 103,597.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Nov 19Nov that the Latin American country may start COVID-19 vaccinations in December if regulatory institutions certify the effectiveness of related drugs.

Mexico is now in contact with firms working on “highly effective projects,” including China’s CanSino Biologics, the United States’s Pfizer and Britain’s AstraZeneca, Ebrard said at a press conference.

Mexico’s COVID-19 death toll exceeded 100,000 on Nov 19, becoming the fourth country in the world to reach the grim milestone after the United States, Brazil and India. 

CHILE again reported more than 1,000 daily cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, with 1,004 new cases raising the total to 544,092.

In the same 24-hour period, seven more patients died of the disease, bringing the death toll to 15,138, according to the Health Ministry.

Of the total caseload, 520,180 people have recovered from the virus.

Currently 700 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in intensive care units, including 540 on ventilators and 69 in critical condition.

BRAZIL’s death toll surpassed 170,000 on Tuesday, after 630 new death cases were reported in the past 24 hours, according to Brazil’s Ministry of Health.

The death number registered on Tuesday was more than twice as many as the 302 of Monday, raising its death toll to 170,115.

Brazil registered 31,100 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, almost doubling the 16,207 of Monday, bringing the total caseload to 6,118,708.

Brazil has the world’s second-highest COVID-19 death toll, after that of the United States, and the third largest outbreak, following the United States and India.

COLOMBIA reported 7,515 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 1,262,494, health authorities said.

Meanwhile, 198 more deaths were reported, raising the nationwide death toll to 35,677, the authorities said, adding that 1,167,857 people have so far recovered from the disease.

The wife of Colombian President Ivan Duque, Maria Juliana Ruiz, has tested positive for COVID-19, the president’s office confirmed Tuesday.

 ARGENTINA reported 7,164 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the national count to 1,381,795.

The ministry said 311 more patients died of the disease, bringing the nationwide tally to 37,432.

A total of 1,210,634 people have recovered from the disease so far nationwide and 133,729 cases are still active, according to the ministry.

URUGUAY will strengthen its testing capacity for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) given a rise in infections, the secretary of the presidency, Alvaro Delgado, said.

“We want to increase it to have more guarantees, and reach the sources of transmission faster and be able to quickly isolate them,” Delgado told local TV channel Teledoce.

The South American country, home to 3.4 million inhabitants, has carried out 401,497 tests for COVID-19 to date.

Uruguay has registered 4,763 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since March 13, and 71 deaths from the disease, according to the latest report from the National Emergency System. — NNN-XINHUA
