Indian Navy On Standby For Relief Operations As Cyclone Approaches

NEW DELHI, Nov 25 (NNN-PTI) – The Indian Navy (IN) is on standby, to carry out rescue and relief operations, in parts of southern India, which are likely to be hit by cyclonic storm Nivar, in the next 15 hours.

The storm is expected to make landfall approximately at around 12.00 p. m. local time today, between Karaikal and Mamallapuram in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

“As the cyclonic storm Nivar, over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm and expected to cross Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coasts today, the Indian Navy is closely monitoring its movement,” said a statement issued by the IN.

According to the statement, the headquarters in Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry naval area were in constant touch with state administration officials, to render assistance as required.

“Ships, aircraft, rescue and diving teams have been kept on standby,” it added.

Meanwhile, the governments of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry states, issued an alert and set up control rooms, to coordinate efforts among various departments, in view of the cyclone.

Both the states have declared a holiday today, in the wake of the cyclonic storm.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, assured complete support to chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, in carrying out relief and rescue work.– NNN-PTI
