KUCHING, Nov 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Sarawak today announced it has foiled an attempt to smuggle into the state 250,500 kg of frozen chicken parts valued at RM1.03 million.
Sarawak Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said the 16,700 cartons of chicken wings, tails and leg quarters were found in six containers at Bintulu port on Nov 11, and that the duty on the products was estimated at RM412,000.
“The seized goods were brought to the Customs enforcement store in Bintulu. A Customs agent who endorsed the trade was detained to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement here.
Herman Shah said a permit issued by the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department is required to import chicken commodities.
“In this case, the importer did not have a valid import permit and there was no halal certificate issued by the halal certification authority of the exporting country recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim),” he said.
