Bangladesh: 34 pirates surrender with 90 arms in Banshkhali

CHATTOGRAM (Bangladesh), Nov 13 (NNN-BSS) — A total of 34 pirates from the coastal areas of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar districts surrendered after handing over 90 weapons to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The pirates surrendered at a ceremony held at Banshkhali Adarsh High School playground around 1 pm.

They handed over 90 used local and foreign-made firearms and 2,056 rounds of ammunition at the function.

Apart from murder and rape cases, other ongoing cases against these pirates will be withdrawn through the legal process, the RAB said.

At that time, the pirates apologized for their past activities and expressed their determination to return to a healthy and normal life, RAB added.

According to the RAB, the RAB will provide all possible assistance to those who have surrendered to return to normal life. The RAB will continue its campaign to bring those who have not yet surrendered under the law.

In the last few years, the pirates have become frustrated due to the continuous operations of the law enforcement agencies. Unable to survive, they began to choose the path of surrender.

A total of 248 pirates were detained, 797 firearms and 8,842 rounds of ammunition were recovered from different areas of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar district since 2004.

A total of 43 pirates surrendered to the RAB in 2018, the source added. — NNN-BSS
