Myanmar Receives About 75,000 Overseas Advance Votes, Three Million Local Advance Votes For General Elections

YANGON, Nov 7 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar received about 75,000 advance votes by its citizens living abroad, while the number of local advance votes reached about three million so far, for the upcoming general elections to be held on Nov 8 (tomorrow), an official from the Union Election Commission said, Friday.

“We have collected about 75,000 votes after the overseas advance voting concluded on Oct 26, while we have received about three million domestic advance votes as of Nov 3,” said Khin Maung Oo, director general of the commission.

Civil servants, who need to work outside their constituencies, citizens, who have to travel on the day of elections, election candidates, senior citizens and those who cannot go to polling stations and detainees are eligible for advance voting, which will end today.

Over 37 million citizens are eligible to vote in the elections, with the participation of 5,639 candidates, involving candidates from 91 political parties and independent runners, the commission’s data showed.

Meanwhile, a 60-day election campaign, which began in early Sept, concluded late yesterday.

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, won an absolute majority in the last general elections on Nov 8, 2015, and has been running the government since 2016.– NNN-MNA
